Today's book was Dog's Colorful Day by Emma Dodd. This book is a messy, colorful, counting book about Dog. Dog starts off the day with one black spot on his ear. But....wherever he goes, he gets into more messy colors! He ends up with red jelly, blue paint, pink ice cream, and many more colors on him by the end of the day. When he finally arrives back home, Dog has TEN different colored spots....and it's time for a bath to wash all the colors away!
After reading the book we had a language activity to review our colors and practice counting to 10. We all took a turn drawing a colored spot on Dog, and trying to remember what caused that dirty spot! The kids had so much fun....and we ended up with the dirty dog from our book!
During science, we did an exploding milk experiment. First, we added different colored food dyes to the white milk and practiced saying our colors. We tried to mix up the colors in the milk using toothpicks covered in dish soap. But....it wouldn't mix....instead the colors expanded. The kids were so amazed....they simply had to try it themselves! No matter how much stirring we did, it wouldn't mix....the colors just moved around! To end science, we added baking soda and vinegar into the mixture and waited to see what happened. The milk exploded and colored bubbles filled the whole container! And...since good science always gets our hands dirty....we all touched the bubbles and played in them for a little bit!
During art, we used frozen paint ice cubes to paint a picture. There were only a certain amount of colors, so this was a good opportunity for them to learn to share. With prompting, we asked our friends for a different color.
What a super FUN first day!! We can't wait to learn more about colors tomorrow!!
